Strike Three on Netflix

I just pulled the plug on Netflix.  Been dragging my feet for a long time, but finally got fed up enough to do it for my family’s moral safety.  Of course, Netflix co-founder and CEO, Reed Hastings’ programming decisions made my job a whole lot easier.

Terminating the popular streaming service didn’t take 13 reasons — just three big ones.

Strike One

“13 Reasons Why”.  Seems like two years ago the streaming service was getting ready to launch a second season of “13 Reasons Why”, in spite of documented suicides by young series viewers.  With a flurry of appeals from the public and petitioned by thousands of subscribers to pull the series in the face of known tragedies, Reed Hastings just plodded ahead.

What kind of CEO would take pride in making corporate decisions that go against the common good?

Strike Two

“The First Temptation of Christ”.  Last Christmas season, Netflix decided to air the Portuguese movie (with English subtitles) “The First Temptation of Christ”, wherein the saviour of the world, ie. God, is depicted as a homosexual, Mary as an adulteress, and Joseph as a bumbling idiot.

Netflix’s conscious decision to air The First Temptation of Christ is a clear and repulsive display of corporate arrogance, and shows complete contempt for the faith of Christians who currently subscribe to, or could subscribe to their services.

Strike Three

“Cuties”.  Pretty sure this is child pornography.  We don’t need productions like this, and we don’t need to support organisations who think we do.  Children are precious gifts from God who need to be able to enjoy childhood for as long as God designed it.  Netflix doesn’t seem to get that.  So sad and so irresponsible.

Your living room

So, what would it take for you to pull the plug on this streaming service whose leadership seems to take pride in pushing the limits of immorality and provoking people of faith?

How many strikes would it take for you to sacrifice a bit of entertainment in favour of your family’s good values?

For me, it took three big ones, but my home is now a safer place.  Lot’s of competitive alternatives out there to Netflix.

Doing the right thing for the right reason always feels good.

Please join me, let your voice be heard, and pull the plug on Netflix.  I speculate Mr. Hastings is betting that you won’t do it.
